She met Wade at a dude ranch where she got smashed on the foot from a horse in front of her while trail riding. She told her father she had an ingrown toenail but had a cast to her knee. Her mother thought she was automatically a US citizen when her father became a US citizen. This was not correct so her mother found out if she went into the Navy, she would become a citizen, Irene enlisted where she worked for dentists stationed at the San Diego Naval base making mold replacements for sailors returning from the South Pacific. One of the returning sailors tried to give her a real shrunken head in gratitude but she declined. After the death of Wade, she ran a boarding kennel and raised harness horses.
