Josiah Bass was a Revolutionary War Soldier at a very early age. He was one of the Braintree men on the Privateer "Essex" of Salem captured by the British in the English Channel and taken prisoner in England in April 1781 and released through the efforts of John Adams. He was then aged only 13 years and was the cabin boy according to tradition. He lived on his father's estate on Hancock St. between Beach & Bass Sts. Wollaston

He lived on part of his father's estate on west side of Center St. Holbrook, north of Mill St., but owned considerable other estate and gave it to daughter Sally Alden just before his death. Farmer & in lumber business.
Jonathan Bass held many town offices, most of which refers to him, perhaps all, a few may belong to Jonathan5 (John4Bass). Only once is he listed as Jonathan Bass 2nd, when elected warden 1766, and after 1776 as Col.. Jonathan. Jonathan Bass was fence viewer 1757,1765,1771, surveyor of highways 1760,1764,1765,1772, constable 1758,1760,1761,1768 but excused, 1770, warden 1764, on committee to lease the No. Commons 1765, selectman 1767,69,70,72,73,74,76,77,1783, tithingman 1774, on committee of correspondence 1775, for hiring men,1777,1780 and Representative 1776, and on many other committees. Removed from house he built on S. part of father's estate 1760-5 to East Randolph where Dea. Lewis Whitcomb now (85) lives says Dr. Alden. It burned in 1791.

S.P.89-190, Jun.8,1790: Samuel Bass of Braintree Esq. made administrator of Jonathan Bass, Esq. & bonded with Daniel Howard of Bridgewater & Ebenezer Torrey of Lancaster, gent.
