BIRTH: Jersey co Illinois Register 11, entry 552.

REMARKS from Shane Fox:
As a young woman Alberta (aunt Bate) taught fifth and sixth grade in the Grafton, Illinois (District 43) school. She was an accomplished piano player and in later years gave lessons. She married a man somewhat her senior and continued to work for the Red Cross in St. Louis well after his retirement from the railroad.

She and H. G. lived childless in an elegant two-story Victorian house at the corner of State and McPherson in Alton, Illinois. The house occupied a large, well-landscaped lot that was surrounded by a black wrought iron fence. She maintained a small patch of rhubarb in the rear which she harvested from time to time for the most exquisite rhubarb pie--sometimes she pulled out all stops and it was rhubarb and strawberry pie.. Her home was the focal point for many family holiday gatherings and meals, particularly after her sister Myra died.

These notes are compiled from a variety of sources including personal recollection, family notes and an article in the Jersey Co Democrat newspaper (5 Oct 1916) listing teachers for 1916 school year.
