Nehemiah was born 17 March 1722/3 in Preston, New London County, Colony of Connecticut, the son of Stephen Gates and Hannah Woodward. He married (1) Elizabeth Baker, "of Norwich" 17 December 1743. Elizabeth died 14 June 1759.[1]He married (2) Sarah (LNAB unknown), who died 8 April 1763.[2] Nehemiah married (3) Mary (Partridge) Woodward, "both of Preston" 1 December 1763. He died 30 August 1790 in Preston.[3]
Nehemiah died testate; his will was dated 15 April 1785. Mentioned in his will are his wife, Mary, and eight children: Daniel, Nehemiah, Cyrus, Mary Manning, Elizabeth Gates, Lydia Gates, Sabra Gates, and Allice [sic.] Gates. Nehemiah signed his will by his mark.[4]
