Text:   Delmar F. "Del" Schuerman, 75, died at 4:47 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in the emergency room of Alton Memorial Hospital.

Born March 12, 1929, in New Douglas, he was the son of Harry and Erma Edna (Fritzsche) Schuerman.

He married Julie A. Schmidt on June 19, 1981, in Edwardsville. A 1947 graduate of Highland Senior High School, he later owned and operated Del’s Amoco Service Station in Staunton, and retired in 1991 from Olin Corporation as a mechanic following 18 years of service. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, he enjoyed flying small-engine airplanes. He was a member of the Westerner Club, the Olin Machinists Union Local 660 and the Gateway Ultra Light Club in Cahokia, Ill.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived and will be greatly missed by three sons, David Schuerman of Fenton, Mo., Victor Schuerman of Staunton and Kevin Slaten of Alton; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Cheryl and John Swartz of St. Louis, Karen and Charles Knoche of Dorchester, Ill., and Judy Slaten, Diane and Ray Greenberg and Mary Beth Slaten, all of Alton; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Earl and Virginia Schuerman of Highland and Roy Schuerman of Godfrey; a sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Arden Eilers of Eldon, Mo.; other extended family and many friends.

His parents preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton, where services honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Patricia Heath will officiate.

Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Godfrey, followed by a dove release in his memory.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dorchester, Ill., or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Youth Group.
